Welcome to Stockdale Christian School’s International Students Program!
Stockdale Christian School has been offering enrollment opportunities to International students since 2004. Students from Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Nigeria, and China have been an important part of our school community at SCS. These students, with their insights, cultural expressions and perspectives have deeply enriched our school’s culture. It is our goal for our International Students to be fully-integrated into the school in terms of language, curriculum, and extra-curricular activities.
Some of our international students reside with host families; others live with their relatives in Bakersfield and the surrounding areas of Kern County. Hosting families are a regular part of Stockdale Christian School’s community; and together with their international students are learning about each other’s cultures and are establishing lifelong friendships.
Mr. Henry Lee is our International Student Program Director and provides all of the support to our international students and parents as they make the transition into the SCS community. Please contact Henry for more information.
SISP Mission Statement
The Mission of the Stockdale International Student Program (SISP) is to provide a high-quality international academic program of excellence with multi-lingual and cultural awareness study opportunities for foreign students who are striving for high academic achievement with a desire to later attend a great high school and a major university in the USA or South Korea.
It is the goal of Stockdale Christian to provide a safe, supportive, caring and encouraging Christian environment. The program builds personal dignity and confidence in which a foreign student can strive to become an honors-level student.
Our students achieve high GPAs in their classes, and the program is augmented by after-school studies and a Saturday Academy to enhance their skills.
Our International Students find themselves housed in a warm and nurturing Christian home for at least one year and sometimes as many as six to seven years as they prepare to apply to a university of top ranking in either the USA or South Korea.
It is a primary goal of SISP to provide educational and social experiences which will facilitate the students’ use of English as a second language and to encourage the students to engage in a third language course to add to their resume of academic and international achievements. SISP includes cultural site visits to the academic field trips to provide students with opportunities to visit museums, art galleries, planetariums and national monuments.
SISP encourages students to begin setting personal goals of attending one or two universities of their choice early in their academic career. SISP conducts informational field trips to many top university sites to help students envision their goals.
To further bolster students’ resumes, the SISP also arranges for our students to participate in community and charity service projects
Teachers will assist your student in becoming acclimated to the American education system. Students will be guided by the caring hands of veteran teachers in every subject, supplemented by tutoring and after-school learning programs. Students will be welcomed by their classmates, and Stockdale Christian School’s teachers accommodate the student’s needs both inside and outside of the classroom. At Stockdale Christian School, students are held to the highest standards.
Stockdale Christian offers an after-school tutoring program for international students to refine and understand the curriculum. From Monday through Thursday, students have access to a quiet work environment where they can be assisted with their homework and classwork or given supplementary materials to enrich their English education.
The program works with the international student program instructors to give your student an intuitive learning experience. For students who further wish to sharpen their English skills, a Saturday English Course is also offered. Students can practice their English reading comprehension by analyzing Current Event materials, such as Newspapers, Scholarly Articles and Scientific Magazines. Students will refine their analytical skills, as well as their ability to write research papers and essays.
For Stockdale Christian School’s Junior High students, Saturday sessions for TOEFL and SAT preparatory classes are also available. Here, students can receive specialized tutoring focused on upcoming exams. Materials and templates are provided to the students, who then receive instruction tailored to their own personal progress. Students will receive one-on-one instruction and feedback in a group environment. Students who participate in Saturday English or test preparatory sessions will excel both inside the classroom, and be better prepared than their peers for future high school and college learning.
